Grant Making Policy

Grants are made to charitable organisations or educational institutions subject to successful applications to specific programmes developed by the New Engineering Foundation, which assist the Foundation in meeting its object. The object of the New Engineering Foundation is;

“The advancement of education for the benefit of the public by the support and development of excellence in engineering, technology, science, mathematics, information technology and other academic areas supporting these disciplines.”

Eligibility

Applications for grants are invited from educational institutions and other charitable organisations only in relation to specific programmes devised by the Foundation. Notification of such programmes will be given via the appropriate channels.

The Foundation does NOT make grants to:

  • replace State or public funds
  • individuals
  • charities with ample resources or fund-raising capability
  • other grant-makers
  • projects that are complete or have already commenced, and would happen in any event without the grant being given

Other Policies

The New Engineering Foundation operates the following policies for grant making decisions;

  1. The Trustees will identify programmes they wish to develop and promote and will allocate funds to those programmes. The selection of individual grantees within each programme will be handled by a relevant expert Advisory Panel appointed by the Trustees. By working with an expert Advisory Panel, the Foundation is able to draw widely upon professional expertise from its unique access to partners in the educational as well as the industrial sector.

  2. The Foundation will judge each case for a grant on its merits. It will assess the details of the project, including timescales for implementation and the means of obtaining value for money. It will consider whether the applicant is capable of undertaking the project and has a satisfactory financial position.

  3. Any grant offered may be subject to conditions regarding the specification and/or management of the projects, progress reports, payment of claims, publicity, future use, etc.

  4. Any grant offered may depend on the availability of funding from other sources or the impact that the project may have on the promotion of other educational projects.

  5. It is normally expected that a period of at least five years will elapse, from the date of payment of an approved grant, before consideration is given to further grants to the same educational institution or charitable organisation. In the case of a grant spread over a period of years, the five year rule will apply from the date of payment of the first instalment.

  6. With certain limited exceptions the Foundation does not involve itself in annual subscriptions or recurring grants.A/SPAN>

  7. The Foundation remains flexible at all times in its policy decisions, in order to preserve the breadth of its charitable endeavours.

  8. Meetings are held at appropriate times during the year to consider grant applications, with larger amounts being referred to the Board for decision. A decision may take up to 18 weeks.

  9. We reserve the right to vary the policies in the light of particular circumstances.
  10. All suitable applications are carefully considered, taking into account inter alia the work and financial position of the institution / charity, and the nature of the project.

  11. The Foundation operates an inclusive and consultative style of grant making with a simple application process and clear straightforward criteria.

  12. Applicants for funding will find fuller details on eligibility criteria and advice on how and where to apply on the NEF website. Application forms will provide further information on specific criteria pertaining to that programme.
